Finding sew-Jo part two

My title sounds like a hall-mark movie title, now that I say it out loud.  So I always have scrappy blocks on the go and I decided this was the time to use them.  I had started a wonky star block a while ago, forgot about it and found it yesterday. So here's the inspiration pic.

My plan was to do this in reverse with the solid being scrappy and vice versa.  Of course the blog with the measurements I needed no longer exists so I had to use my math skills, eek.  Here's what I have so far.

The solid looks navy in this light but is's actually Kona purple/grape.  Not bad so far.  So it's going to end up square and I'm not sure if I like that. I'll have to figure out a way to make it rectangular once I have the main part done.

Wow, I had no idea you had so many tops done.  That's amazing.  Maybe you could offer one of the tops as a prize to the entrants at your upcoming quilt show or partner with a talented finisher and donate it to a cause you believe in.  I love the radiant star quilt.  I tried doing something similar before the math killed me.  If it doesn't have a home I know that quilts, especially star quilts are given as a special honour to deserving people in most First Nations communities.  Maybe communities in your area are looking to buy some to give to special leaders or achievers. 

  I've had trouble with the sew-jo but I did manage to finish a scrappy baby quilt for my cousin's newest son, Zoltan Octavius ( I'm serious,that's his name).  I had been hoarding some scraps from the quilt I had made Pere a long time ago so scrappy was a way I could use those bits.  She recognized them right away, so I knew I made the right choice.  It's pretty simple but they have two other kids and three dogs so it had to be easily washable.  Keep up the updating, I'm going to try and be better at documenting my creativity as well.  Her

An update ...

I spent some time on Friday checking out what I have going on in the quilting world.  I have 24 quilt tops done, 6 quit tops started or maybe more.  I knew there were a lot but come on 30 quilt tops ... Where am I ever going to use 30 quilts???  So my new plan ... I'm going to put them on Etsy.  There's got to be a few of them that I'm willing to get rid of, right?

So here's one of the started quilt tops I worked on this past Friday:

I've always like the quilts with the start half on the quilt.  I figured I would get this one done ... Or at least the pieces put together.  

I was going to put white as the background but then decided to go with black.  It really seems to make the star stand out.  I'm going to quilt it with bright coloured thread just like this pictured below:

That's the quilt that I looked at for a pattern.  Just kind of made the parallelograms into whatever size I wanted and went with it.  I was able to use my rule ... Have I told you how much I love all my rulers??  I found a couple other ones the other day that I think I might need, some time in the future!!  I ran out of black material so I couldn't finish this one.  I don't have any batting left (I can't believe I used it all up and now our dollar is too bad to look for another roll).  

So as you can only guess, I started another quilt!!  This is the one I thought I would do:

I got it started but decided to change it up a bit because I didn't like the way they were sewing each little square together instead of doing some strip piecing. 

I figured that I could do a pinwheel with one wheel instead of with 3 and then it wouldn't take me so long.  I should have just done three and followed the instructions, but what fun is that!!!

I wasn't sure how big of a slab of material I would need to add... It took me sometime to get it figured out but I did!!  Here it is, 12 in x 12 in ... I need to  add on to it because they are suppose to be 15 in x 15 in.

My picture taking skills need some work.  Sorry about the blurry pictures!!!  

I'm going to set the goal of finishing - quilted and bound - at least 2 quilts a month.  Not sure where I'm going to store them but I'm going to get them done!!!

Obsessed with Paper Piecing!!!

I can't believe I'm paper peicing!!! Totally obsessed with it.

This one is easy!! You could do it!! I found a great tutorial on Pinterest! It made it so easy. So easy!!!

This one needs some more work. I need to practice making this one again.

A Butterfly ... I might be crazy!!

When Dallas and I were on holidays, he pointed out this quilt to me:

I was huge and beautful.  I didn't think much of it after we saw it.  I think it was at the Botanical gardens in Maddison, WI that we visited.  During our visit we picked out some plant and actually agreed on a yard design!!  Pretty exciting stuff.  Now we just need a yard!!

Anyways ... When I got back I looked at the pile of blue material that I bought to make Dallas' mom a quilt with.  I was going to make her a Northern Lights Quilt by JayBird Quilts.  Sitting here watching golf at St. Andrews in Scotland, I thought why not draw out the butterfly.  So I did...  

I did have all the little blocks in it like the orginial quilt in the picture above but then I thought, I don't have enough material or creative design ability to do it.  So I erased all the blocks and kept the outline. I went in search of a design and found this ...

Thank you Google!!!  I figured I could do somthing like like this.  So I got out some markers and coloured!!  

This is what I've come up with:

I might have to adjust lines or add in some half square triangles to make things flow a little more.  I figured this is a good guide.  Have I mentioned that I love graph paper???  Well I do.  I figure I can even make this a lap quilt (I know ... gasp!!!)  I'm going to make each square equal 1 in (finished size).  That will make the butterfly 43 in by 36 in.  Add on a small border and done!!  I figured I would be smart about the design and made all the half square triangles the same.  Then I can bulk make them and be done!!  The other parts of the quilt can be cut in different lengths, times 2 - one for the left side and one for the right.  I figure it will be some what time consuming but should look good when I get it done.

As always ... I need more time to get these projects finished or maybe I just need to use my time better!!!  Deep thoguht for the day!!
